WHAT IS ARTHROSCOPIC SURGERY?
Arthroscopic surgeries are also known as arthroscopies, scopes, or even more generically as just a “knee surgery” or “shoulder surgery.” This is because arthroscopies are now the preferred and leading way for surgeons to repair the damage done to structures in the body. It is the most common type of orthopedic surgery and used to treat many patients of New York personal injuries.
During arthroscopic surgery, multiple incisions are made around the area being treated. These incisions are small, some less than an inch and others small enough to barely fit a pencil. One incision is used to put a camera in to see the vital structures in the joint or area where the surgery is being performed. Another incision is for the main tool(s) to go into the surgical area to help perform the procedure. A third incision may be used to put other tools to hold or manipulate tissue for the main tools to cut or stitch. Finally, fourth incision may be used to blow air into the surgical area to help inflate the tissue to make it easier for the surgeon to see and manipulate tissue or devices.
While three or four incisions may sound like a lot, these incisions are very small which minimizes trauma to the area. The total length of these scope incisions are typically smaller than the traditional way of making one large incision. This reduces the risk of infection and speeds up recovery time.
COMMON TYPES OF ARTHROSCOPIC SURGERIES
There are several different types of arthroscopic surgeries that could be performed on a victim of a New York personal injury accident such as a car accident, trucking wreck, motorcycle crash, slip and fall or trip and fall, or work site accident.
