WHAT IS A CERVICAL FUSION?
A cervical fusion is a type of spinal fusion in the neck. This is a procedure which is intended to limit the flexion and movement of the spine. The spine moves because it is built of vertebrae stacked on each other. Each vertebrae is cushioned with a soft disc. Nerves from the spinal cord extend beyond the soft discs between the vertebrae. When the vertebrae is damaged or a disc is injured, it can place pressure on the nerves. This is what can cause pain, and in some instances, it can be catastrophic disability.
A cervical fusion replaces a disc with an artificial disc such as cement spacer, bone graft, or other divider. The vertebrae above and below the disc have parts of bone removed and screws are placed two on each vertebrae involved. One rod on each side is then sowed into the screws which are tightened. The rods and screws hold the two vertebrae in place, and the cement spacer prevents wiggling, movement, or flexion which could irritate the nearby nerve.
CAUSES OF A CERVICAL FUSION
A cervical fusion after a car accident can occur when there is a high-speed collision, heavy rear-end collision such as with an 18-wheeler, or a catastrophic head-on or side impact. Victims who suffer from these types of collisions may suffer significant damage to their spines, especially their neck. Some of the most common causes resulting in a spinal fusion include the following:
- Whiplash accidents
- Rear end collisions
- Head on crashes
- Side impact crashes
- Rollover collisions
- Trucking accidents
- Delivery van collisions
- Multiple vehicle collisions
- Highway crashes, and
- Many other types of motor vehicles.
